I got a car! After spending ten months proving that I can get anywhere I need by walking or taking the bus, I finally gave in. I didn't get it to make my life easier--if anything, I resisted so long out of stubborn pride. Rather, I want to be able to help out the incoming JETs this summer, seeing as how I'll be the only veteran in the southern part of the island. It's a white four-door Suzuki Kei. I've got a picture here.
It's about five and a half feet wide and might be ten feet long. It's about 13 years old, but has an aftermarket CD player already installed. Everything's just fine about it, except that the cloth interior reeks of smoke. It's not as bad as it could be--the smoke smell doesn't soak into my clothes--but it's still a little annoying. I'm trying to get rid of it, but every time I get in the car, I'm reminded of both my aunt Sylvia and my grandmother, the only people in my family who smoked in their houses. Those memories are nice, so I can't complain a whole lot, I guess.
The car also gets about 30 miles to the gallon. I got 360km out of 24.2L, which I think equals that mileage. I haven't been paying much attention, but I think gas here is Y160 per liter, which comes out to about $5 per gallon. I hope my math is wrong.
I'm also helping out with one of the first-year homeroom classes. I haven't had to do anything big yet, but my cleaning area is now that homeroom. Now, instead of hacking at weeds, I help clean up a classroom. I'm sure it'll get old, but at least I'm accomplishing something. The area I used to clean outside was of no importance whatsoever to the grounds, and we spent most of our time digging up earthworms and grubs. As fun as it is to chase after schoolgirls with a ten-inch-long writhing annelid, you never really get anywhere. Now, at least, I can dust off my hands and appreciate the fruits of my labor.
